Amit Salariya - 39 years

On September 14, 2015, 39 year old Amit Salariya will celebrate his first year post transplant. He has used this second chance at life wisely; he states," I dedicate my time to my wife and children. My children were very young, just 9 and 7, when they saw their father suffer a lot and were traumatized by it. Prior to this surgery, I was worried about my children growing up without a father and concerned about my wife. I was frustrated at my inability to help them; I was very emotional and would get angry easily, as I felt helpless. I still remember the call we got on September 13, 2014, from Hyderabad that changed my life. Now I think about the donor family and I am thankful to them for giving me this new lease of life.

Aqeel Mistry - 32 years

Like most 30 year olds, Aqeel is a young man with dreams and plans of a whole life ahead of him. However, in 2007 he developed liver cirrhosis of unknown origin. His life began to deteriorate; he could not go to work, had limited mobility due to water retention and was frequently admitted at the hospital for drips and medication or was mostly home bound. He began feeling hopeless about his future that looked bleak and short and getting frustrated at everything. All of this changed one day in March 2013; he received a call, the call he dared not hope for, the call that changed his life, they had a donor. He underwent a successful transplant that has changed his life drastically. He states, "I have left it all behind, I now go to work, the gym, play sports, I feel I have so much to look forward. This experience made me and my family pledge to be organ donors and we feel blessed that we were able to receive this gift and come out of it

Dnyshree Ghule - 19 years

Dnyshree was a mere two months short of her 16th birthday when she developed jaundice. Yes, just jaundice. But her condition deteriorated drastically in 20 days and her doctors felt a liver transplant was her only option. Her situation was critical, that led her doctors at the Pune Hospital to contact Apollo Chennai; she was then airlifted to Chennai. On March 20, 2013, she received a donor organ that gave her a chance at life again. Now nineteen year old Dnyshree states, "Life is normal now and I am thankful for that. I never thought about organ donation before; now, my whole family and I have decided to donate. Now, whenever I get a chance, I tell people about this and encourage them to do the same

Kumardarani - 53 years old

Kumaradarani is now six years post liver transplant and is enjoying her new lease on life. She is now the proud grandmother of an energetic 18 month old granddaughter. She has married off one of her sons and is seeking a suitable match for her other son. All this seemed like a distant dream six years ago, when she could not care for her children, barely walk or eat and was constantly worried about her children's future, a future she did not think she could be a part of. She and her children feel lucky and grateful for this time together and would also like to be organ donors as they now recognize the impact this act has on their lives.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough! Patients are advised to adopt a healthy lifestyle and follow a regular schedule of physical activity appropriate to their age and capacity after transplant. They can undertake even strenuous physical activity if they so desire such as running, trekking or swimming once they are on steady maintenance immunosuppression. Of course, the build-up towards the targeted activity should be gradual and systematic. JBA was suffering from Cryptogenic Cirrhosis with liver failure. He underwent deceased donor liver transplantation in March 2012. He had a longstanding desire to visit Kailash Mansarovar and successfully completed the physically arduous journey in June 2013, one and a half years following liver transplantation.

Babitha Adul Rasheed

Babitha had liver failure due to Wilson's disease, an inherited defect in copper metabolism. She received a new lease of life through liver transplantation on September 2009. Two years following her transplant, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy on December 28, 2012. It was a normal delivery. By seeing her baby's face she said, "I just feel like a whole new person."

Baby Mamoon’s story

Omani parents were elated to welcome their 3rd child, baby Mamoon. Three months later, tragedy struck them when he developed jaundice. Very quickly he became sick, confused and refused to eat well. Doctors in Oman recommended liver transplant to save his life. The facility was not available in his native country. His parents managed to pool in resources and travel to Apollo Chennai for further treatment. After a lot of hard work and weeks of hospitalization, the baby was made fit to undergo transplant. At 5 months of age, he barely weighed 5kgs. His father donated his left lateral segment and Mamoon underwent a successful liver transplant. He had rocky course and needed another operation. Finally after a few weeks, he was discharged from the hospital. Two months later he went back to Oman. He is 3 years of age now and is going to school and is doing very well.
